The best part about going to a school is that you will be able to put it on your IT resume, as most businesses will not take a webmaster that lacks a college education.

You could choose to learn by yourself and there are some companies that will hire you regardless, but most people will go into business for themselves if they decide to pick up a book and learn at home.

Most web servers run on UNIX, so make sure you know that particular system inside and out before you move on to other applications. Once you master all of this, you will be surprised at just what you can do.
