We depend heavily on it to record information. It is used as a wrapping for lots of items. Children's products, like diapers, are manufactured from it. Various by-products from the manufacturing process are utilized in industry and kitchen related products, like the ketchup thickening. It is found and used so widely worldwide that these products can be considered to be almost limitless in its applications that can be developed for many domains. We find it in so many varieties of products and packaging that we pass it every day and we never think of its complexity. We find it in many grades and shapes.

The main ingredient from which pulp is produced is usually plants, and after it is diluted it is part of the building process of screen fibers. The main plant employed in the manufacturing is wood, but other are sometimes used as well but in smaller quantities.

Various kinds of pulp are manufactured by mills. Variety is achieved through use of different kinds of wood, various techniques and the bleach used. In each of these combinations, a product with different qualities is produced.

Mills are most of the time integrated in the factories, but there are also those that sell dissolving pulp.This is a by-product of the manufacturing process. This substance is used as a key ingredient in the making of products like thickeners, plastics, explosives or artificial casings. Today's manufacturing processes are a fine combination of high technology and craftsmanship. The same technology is applied to produce most of the paper. The wide variety of pulps and ingredients combined in different variations however produce hundreds of grades and qualities.

The product can be categorized into three functional groups if you want to simplify the classification. The first among them is for writing and printing purposes. Examples are newsprint, books, note books etc. The second use is for packaging, either industrial or commercial. Some of the examples are bags and cardboard. And the third use is for personal and hygienic purposes like sanitary napkins, diapers etc.

The main challenges that mills face these days is the impact of their activity on the environment. To have a lesser impact mills try to increase the efficiency of fiber making, the disposal of solid waste and improving water and air emissions. But the primary preoccupation is the maintenance of their main ingredient: the forest. This protection for the environment is demanded more and more by the clients who want high environmental standards. This led to the creation of regulations that are imposed on the mills for their forestry operations. Mills are regularly checked for compliance.

The pulp and paper products and by-products are used by us every day. They became an integral part of our society. The industry has a wide variety of benefits both for the employment levels of communities and for the economy in general.
