The interior of our home is our safe haven, the place we come to get away from the world and it should be a place we can relax. If your home is cluttered with stuff to the point that you can't relax, then you probably need to spend some time and get organized. Being organized at home will flow over into other parts of your life. If you find that every time you sit down to relax in the living room, you can't use the end table to sit a book on, then it's time to de-clutter. If you have to move paper work off the kitchen counter before you prepare food, then it's time to organize your home. If you can't close your closet door, then it's time to clean it out.

When our home is organized, we feel better. Here are some examples of how our home can influence our feelings. If you were to sit down in the living room and have room to put your book on the end table, it would make you want to sit there more often and this would create a happy mood. If would create a space for the paperwork that is always on the kitchen counter, then you wouldn't get frustrated. Bedrooms always look neater when closet doors are closed. If your closet door will not close, then the first thing you see in the morning is that messy closet and that can make you feel messy.
The process of de-cluttering begins with a motivated attitude, taking on one room at a time. Start the room with every intention to finish it before moving onto another project or room. Prepared yourself that it may not be easy, but it will be worth the effort. Begin by removing clutter from the room and placing it out of the way while you work. This is the appropriate time for painting, maintenances and arranging the furniture to fit the space.

If you have the space ready, it is time to put the furniture back into the room. Using a focal point in the space can help you with knowing where to place your furniture, but if you are having trouble with this, Hickory Designer offers space planning for clients. Now that the furniture is in, it is time to place accessories, lamps, pictures and rugs. You don't have to use all of the ones you had in the room since you are trying to de-clutter the space and try to get creative with the ones you decide to use. You may be able to use the other items for a fresh new look in another room of the house. Try using symmetry and really accentuate the focal point of the room. For example, if the fireplace is the focal point, try balancing the items you put on the mantle with the items you place on the hearth.
We hope you enjoy living in a clutter free space. We recommend that you remember to put things back as they were so that the space stays neat and don't buy new stuff that will add clutter. Sometimes less is more. De-cluttering a space can be challenging, but rewarding. For those of you who have it on your to-do-list, we suggest you get started today and see what a difference it can make in your everyday life.
