Working at home can be a challenge. The whole day can go by quickly and before you realize, it's dinnertime and you have nothing done. Then you are in a panic at the last minute to get something done so that you didn't waste your whole day. Then there is that nagging feeling because you didn't accomplish anything all day that keeps you from enjoying your evening.
If you have a long to-do list it may be hard to accomplish everything in one day. But with these three simple tips you can get your work done and avoid letting the day fly by.
Don't begin your day without some preplanning. Start the evening before and think about what you want to accomplish the next day. Pick one thing that you absolutely must get accomplished the next day and write it down. It sounds simple but it takes practice. You must prioritize. The next morning start with the most important task. Sit down and do it first, before you do anything else. That means don't go on line and check your email, or the news, or pick up the phone to confirm an appointment.
Stop multitasking. You may have heard that people get more accomplished by multitasking but studies have shown that the opposite happens. In fact most people become distracted and lose their train of thought. Some people never get back to the task at hand. When you work from home it is easy to be tempted to do things that need to be done around the house. Don't stop writing that letter or putting together that ad campaign to throw in a load of laundry. Finish the task you are working on before doing or starting anything else and you will find that you get more done.
Many would argue that the biggest distraction in all offices both home and commercial is social media. Avoid it. We have all used it to procrastinate a task we just don't feel like doing. Email is the same way. In my case I have more then one email to check. Checking email, Facebook, and Twitter waste just enough time that it becomes too late to do the task you were avoiding. It's simple to remember. Task first then social media and email.
With these three simple rules you will find you get more done and won't have the nagging feeling at night about not getting anything done. When you feel accomplished at the end of the day you will actually enjoy your evenings.
