Every program include hundreds of shortcuts that are not used.
The causes for this vary but generally include:
1. Learning hundreds of the shortcuts is not possible. 2. Workers disrupt their workflow as they try to recall all but the most frequently used shortcuts. 3. Most shortcuts are hard to remember and are therefore entered wrong. 4. The necessity to undo and fix errors causes frustration, loss of time, and reduced efficiency. 5. Overuse of the mouse and keyboard can trigger repetitive strain injury and fatigue for the typist.
You intuitively know if you could memorize every on of the shortcuts and use of them:
1. Your typing speed would increase. 2. You would have greater accuracy. 3. Your effectiveness would be increased.
You might know somebody who can recall every shortcut with no difficulty. Without trying their fingers cause wonderful things to happen. Their mouse sits idle while others would be pointing and clicking. They seem to have an gift for shortcuts.
The fact is these people, particularly those who use numerous programs each day, are the exception. Apart from the most basic shortcuts, most users can neither remember all the shortcuts, nor position their fingers to the correct keys without hesitating.
The question is why do software program come with so many shortcuts in the first place? Because the regular keyboard isn't conducive to using all the shortcuts mouse use and dropdown menus are necessary evil. Using the mouse quickly grows to be tiresome and time consuming. This is particularly true when speed and precision are required.
An overlay keyboard can resolve all your shortcut problems. Every key can be programmed to reproduce any shortcut. When a graphic template is used to label and color code the keys finding the right overlay key is easy.
