Web designers have been focusing on the way that web pages look since their existence came about in the early nineteen nineties. Here we will focus on the evolution of web design in the history of the internet. Especially focusing on the layout and ease of access of the content made available.
The Very first websites were quite simple in design. They included only text and almost no pictures. Most had headings and a few paragraphs but no actually navigable menus. The first page that came to be, which is still viewable, had about twelve links or so and was only there to tell you what the purpose of the internet was. This page was devoid of images and only served its purpose. Pages came after that but there were no real advancements in coding until about nineteen ninety four when support for tables came to be.
The Worldwide Web Consortium was formed this year, its purpose being to regulate the coding that was done for web pages to ensure that the general public would be able to continue to access its content. They continue to set the standards for web development today. Had they not intervened there could be several different programming languages for browsers meaning that you could not view all pages with the same browsers.
Eventually something called a table based design became more popular. These still used HTML coding but arranged information in such a way that it was easier for a user to find what they were looking for by providing new sections for information. The problems only mounted for designers however as the new coding system required them to add images to space information farther apart. Sites were beginning to become more aesthetic and visually appealing to the user.
Eventually programs like flash and shock wave were produced. These programs provided ways for designers to eliminate the need for spacer images by providing an environment that allowed for easily programmable interactive site features such as menus and navigational bars. Java Script became incredibly popular with game designers and advertisers alike, both of which were finding new homes on the internet. Websites at this point became both visual and informative, some of which were even considered recreational. This led to the rise of the popular browser based game.
In early two thousand one a format known as CSS started to become increasingly popular. While it had been available in the past, most designers were intimidated by its complexity. The advantages are what set it aside from the rest though. CSS separates design elements from the content, which essentially means that there would be a greater visual distinction between the graphic aspects of a site and its actual content.
Another important trend of web design development has always been the file sizes. CSS file sizes tend to be much smaller than those of other formats and thereby increases the speed at which the web page can be loaded. This functions on a cache system meaning that the first time a computer accesses the site it may take a while but follow up visits will be loaded much faster.

When you look at where the internet has been along its journey, it can be hard to tell where we are headed as far as web design is concerned. Surely they will become more visually exciting and even easier to access, with users accessing information at all times of the day. Maybe even easier to use if that is at all possible. One thing is for sure, the future of the internet is boundless and one can only wait and see what comes next for web design.
