Got the red ring of death on your Xbox 360? Then perhaps you've heard of the towel trick. The red ring of death is a royal pain but it's not the end of the world. Don't let your aggravation make you do something you'll later regret.
The towel fix involves wrapping your console in a few towels then running it for a prescribed amount of time. The soldering within the console gets hot which makes it soft enough to fix any broken connections. At least that's the theory for it. The technique is simple enough but does it work and is it a good thing to do to your Xbox?
Although there are tons of videos on YouTube explaining this method, a great deal of these are posted by amateurs and kids. They don't worry much about whether their fix causes any lasting damage. Better solutions exist for dealing with the ring of death.
People using this technique often end up with a severely damaged Xbox while the lucky ones get a temporary fix. Continual usage of this fix causes additional damage to the electronics. When the cumulative damage becomes too severe, the towel trick doesn't work anymore.
With this method the overheating problem doesn't get solved permanently. It is guaranteed to make your console even more prone to getting too hot.
The explanation behind this is that microchips are damaged by exposure to heat. This is why cooling systems are always used in these devices. If blasting the console with heat is how you're supposed to fix the overheating problem, then this should be a tip off that something is wrong with the technique.
The towel fix is simply not a solution. A lot of people who have used it haven't had any success.
Don't do this to your Xbox 360. Instead, send it back to Microsoft if your warranty is still intact. If not, do the repair yourself or send it to a repair shop.
If you decide to do it yourself, you must get a good repair guide. Of course this means opening up the console. This might result in further damage if you aren't careful. But if you're able to use some basic tools and can exactly follow the guide's instructions, you will do OK.
