Over the past couple of years the movie and music industry has been hit hard by internet bootlegges and most of the entertainment money is now being spent on video games. There are definitely places where you can find the video games online, but that doesn't mean that they will work on all of the systems out there. More often than not they actually don't. As a result consoles like the Playstation has not really been hit by problems with piracy and there is still loads of money in the video games industry as a result.
The popularity of games in general has increase over the past couple of years and with technological advances the realism gets better all the time. As it is big business, there are huge budgets allocated to developing new titles and to get them to market as quickly as possible. One of these examples is something like the Final Fantasy franchise, which constantly pushes the boundaries of graphical and system abilities and they have been doing this very effectively for the past few years. There has however been a bit of a downside to some of these advances. The most significant is that even though you have amazing graphics and sounds, the playability and fun has suffered.
I remember playing the super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, still do from time to time, and this is due to the fact that these games are just great. I can still enjoy Mario or Sonic and even though the graphics do not have much in common with the current releases their replay ability and simplicity of controls is remarkable. It takes minutes to play and years to master, and this I do not see in the new releases.
Many of the games these days just look and feel like you are part of an interactive movie and as a result you will almost definitely only play it once. After you have worked through the game for the first time you will know the basic story and if you do play again, you will probably only be re-tracing your footsteps.
There are some exceptions to this rule and something like the Grand Theft Auto series of games is a prime example and as a result has become extremely popular. However even these games are starting to lose some of their appeal as nothing new is really developed, but old ideas are just being rehashed. In GTA you are still running around stealing cars, hitting people and completing your missions, with the only real difference being the improved graphics. It makes sense that the graphics should be taken seriously, but why not spend some more time on thinking how you can bring back more of the fun.
