These days kids and video games seem to go together like peas in a pod. Some children are so hooked on gaming it affects there behavior resulting in tantrums and fits of anger at times when being told to stop playing games. This is actually a growing problem for a lot of parents, and because of this parents should at the very least be educated a little about what there children are choosing to play, especially on the Internet.
Now with most kids getting time on the PC they find Internet gaming sites. While it is true to say that a number of free online games may have violence or other unsavory elements to them, this does not mean that all Internet games are the same. If your child is hooked on games a better approach than an outright ban would be to study and learn about the games that children are playing and can have access to. There are many games that are good for children to play and can stimulate their mind and learning capacity.
Strategy and thinking games are excellent choices, games that involve skill and memory will both exercise a childs brain. Applying problem solving skills in games such as Tetris or Backgammon will help children with applying those same skills in real life situations. Scrabble or other word games will help to encourage a growth in childrens vocabulary as well as strategy skills.
Some online RPG games are good to encourage a general mental alertness in a childs mind, being aware of how things in the virtual environment effect each other is a skill that also can be applied in life later on. You will even find online versions of classic board games that help stimulate the brain like Chess or Checkers.
As said before, some games may not be appropriate for children because it may contain harsh or foul words, so it is the challenge to parents that they monitor the games that their children play in order for them to benefit from online games.
A good idea for parents is even to join in and play some of these games with their children. Even doing so will encourage the child to stick with the game you have chosen and approved for them, and it is a way to strengthen the bond with your child.
Now despite the stimulation that online gaming can provide for children it is equally important for parents to remember that a child needs social interaction with other kids. Online games can be good but too much can lead to antisocial traits coming through. This is why it is very important to make time for outdoor activity and include friends and other children, after all you need to exercise your body just as much as you need to exercise your mind!
