Technology has a way of taking the existing modern culture and making it more sophisticated and alluring to the masses. It is hence not surprising to see a new culture being formed today. The two gigantic communication technologies of the 20th century, namely the computer and television, were merged to give us a technology that is forming a parallel culture. This phenomenon is called 'the gaming culture' and the youth of today swear by it.
Entertainment for the youth is increasingly becoming hi-tech, and gaming is taking it to a whole new level. The gaming culture comprises of games played on personal computers, or on gaming consoles like the Xbox, PlayStation or Wii, on the cell phones or on hand held gaming devices like the PSP or the Nintendo DS.
There are some amazing developments with gaming consoles like the Wii. It is engaging players in a whole different way and focused on physical interaction with the games and other players. The whole world is your play ground and you can play against players from across the globe through the net. Gone are the ideas that all of the games played by kids result in them spending endless hours sitting behind a screen vegetating. Games these days actually have real life value weaved into them. These games often encourage players to interact with others and to reach goals through team work and solving puzzles.
Educators can use this platform as a great teaching tool as teens are communicating better, by connecting with friends they know or making new ones on-line. Gaming forums, blogs, websites, writing reviews on games are becoming a popular fad among teens. Both, teaching and learning can be fun by drawing from this new culture.
Playing games in an interesting aspect in a teens life, it ups the fun and excitement quotient. But all things in moderation is the key to a healthy lifestyle. The gaming culture is a part of the whole. As long as it stays that way, the critics can give it a rest.
