Tetris is one of the most well known video games ever created. I believe it is probably the most popular game ever to be played on a computer. The origins of the game goes back to similiar puzzles back in the very early 1900's. However the idea of these types of puzzles have been around for thousands of years.
There have been studies done which show that Tetris leads to more effective brain activity. When players start playing Tetris for the first time there is an increase in the cerebral energy use as calculated by the glucose metabolic rate. As players improve their skills the amount of glucose used decrases, showing that the brian is working more effectively. It showed overall improvement in general cognitive tasks as well with improvement in language, reasons, critical thinking and processing.
It is thought that Tetris might interrupt memories preserved of the sounds and sights at that time. There are then later experience through involuntary and distressing flashbacks of it.
According to a research made by a group in the Oxford University which is led by Dr. Emily Holmes, this game may also cause a recurrent stress pattern in that the brain may unwillingly picture Tetris arrangements even if the player isn't playing the game anymore. Even though this may take place with any situation or computer game showcasing recurred scenarios or images, such as the jigsaw puzzle.
There are loads of games out there that are extremely useful in giving you some brain training. On many of these game sites you will find these games that can be played for free. The ones you should be looking for are the strategy games and the puzzle games. These can be played at any time and is especially good in between loads of work.
