If you are playing TvP, or really any multiplayer at all, you want to be scouting. This way you can see early on what your opponent is going to be doing and you can plan accordingly. You need to be in his base or at least checking in now and then. Here are a few things you want to be looking for.

1. Early Gas

Protoss builds usually require an Assimilator at around 13 or 14 supply. But because Void Rays require so much gas your opponent will need an additional assimilator. If you see one, start to prepare for a Vod Ray Assault.


2. The Wall Off - Pylon / Gateway / Cybernetic Core

Should your opponent be blocking your entrance with any of these it is because he is up to something and he does not want you to know. While there is no way of knowing for sure, you need to either find out or plan for the worse.

3. Mass Zealots

If you see a bunch of zealots and not much else, chances are that your opponent is preparing for a massive Void Ray Rush, as he is hoarding his gas for them.

4. Map is the Key

Void Rays are more conducive strategy on maps that have short distances for air travel. If you end up on a map like this, be prepared.

Defend

There are many Starcraft 2 strategies guides you can follow. But their are really 2 ways to counter the void ray rush. The first is to prevent the rush from happening as long as possible. How? Build lots of Marines and just keep the pressure on him. If he can't get the resources or get his units out to build, that gives you more time to build your forces and take him by force.

The other step to take is to turtle in and set up a bunch of turrets to protect yourself, throw everything at defense, then when he is down go for the counter.
