These days it might seem like unthinkable but there was a time when kids had to go to an arcade to play games if they wanted to. The idea playing games at home just seamed like an unrealistic dream with the technology at that time. It almost seems unthinkable to the kids these days that there was however a fairly decent variety of games you could play back then.
The gaming arcades of old contained many wonders that kept youngsters enthralled for hours on end. There were fortune telling machines, pinball machines, baseball and bowling simulators and diggers that could be found in thousands of times the world over.
Pinball was one of the most popular games of all in these arcades. It evolved from a game played in France called bagatelle. The idea of pinball was very simple, but it was a game where you could become very skilled and keep playing for a long time. To play the game you needed to keep the metal ball bouncing around on the screen and stop it from dropping down the bottom where there were two paddles you controlled. With the paddles you would attempt to keep the ball from dropping out the bottom for as long as possible.
Pinball may have been at the top of games pile for a long time, but the sports games really gave it stiff competition. You would be able to play baseball games where you would try to hit designated targets in the outfield by swinging a small metal bat. You could also play a bowling game where you would be awarded for getting good scores .
One of the my favorites were the shooting galleries. You could try to knock down as many of the targets that popped up all over the place using your gun. Depending on the game you were playing you would be using anything from a pistol through to a machine gun and the guns used to be very realistic.
The mechanical nature of these vintage games would probably not be as wonderful for modern gamers. These features however brought a world of wonder and imagination to those who played them and their authentic mechanical feel really made them fun. Even effects like different kinds of lighting that made glow in the dark features pop out at you made the games very exciting.
The arcade games of the past provided a hands-on, sensual gaming experience which has to be experienced to be appreciated.
